How to Feed a Maine Coon Kitten: Amounts, Frequency, and Food Choice
Nutrition in the first year shapes a Maine Coon's development more than almost anything else. Getting this right matters.
The Challenge
Maine Coon kittens need more calories than typical domestic kittens because of their larger frame and faster growth rate — but 'more food' isn't a precise enough guide. Overfeeding causes joint stress in a breed already predisposed to hip dysplasia. Underfeeding slows the bone development that determines final adult size. Most generic kitten feeding guides aren't calibrated for a cat that will eventually weigh 7kg.
What We've Found
High-protein wet food as the primary food, supplemented with a breed-appropriate dry kibble, is the combination that worked best for Pumpkin's growth. The wet food handles hydration and protein density; the dry food provides dental benefits and satiety. Feeding three times daily up to six months, then twice daily from six months forward. Body condition scoring monthly — you should be able to feel ribs without pressing hard — is more reliable than following package amounts alone.
