Maine Coon Grooming Routine: Tools, Frequency, and Technique

A Maine Coon's coat is one of their most beautiful features — and one that needs consistent maintenance to stay that way.

The Challenge

Skipping grooming for even two weeks can lead to mats forming behind the ears, in the armpits, and at the base of the tail — the three spots where fur catches and knots fastest. Trying to remove established mats is stressful for the cat and often ends with scissors being necessary. Starting a grooming habit early, before mats form, is dramatically easier than dealing with them reactively.

What We've Found

The routine that works for Pumpkin takes about eight minutes: a slicker brush through the whole coat to catch loose fur and surface tangles, then a wide-tooth metal comb through the belly, armpits, and behind the ears. The comb is what catches developing mats before they tighten. Getting Pumpkin used to this starting at 10 weeks means she now tolerates it completely — the trick was keeping early sessions very short and ending on a positive note every time.
