Maine Coon Kitten First Week Home: What No One Tells You
The first week is the most disorienting for both kitten and owner. Setting realistic expectations makes a huge difference in how smoothly the transition goes.
The Challenge
A lot of new kitten owners expect an immediate snuggly bond — and then panic when the kitten hides under the bed for two days, cries at night, or refuses to eat. This is completely normal adjustment behavior, but without context it feels like something is wrong. The worry can cause owners to over-handle the kitten and slow down the bonding process.
What We've Found
Pumpkin spent most of her first 48 hours in one corner of a single room. That's standard — limiting territory initially helps kittens establish scent security before exploring. By day four she was initiating play. By day seven she was already choosing to sleep near people. The key is patience and low-pressure presence: be around without demanding interaction.
