The Maine Coon Water Obsession Explained
Maine Coons and water is a well-known combination, but it still catches new owners off guard when a kitten starts batting their water glass across the table.
The Challenge
The water fascination is funny until a cat is systematically emptying their drinking bowl across the kitchen floor or trying to climb into the shower. Beyond the mess, some owners worry their cat isn't drinking enough because they keep disturbing the bowl. Static water bowls often get ignored entirely, which creates real hydration problems over time.
What We've Found
A running water fountain solved the bowl-pawing almost immediately for Pumpkin. Maine Coons are drawn to moving water — it triggers something instinctual — and a fountain provides that stimulation without the chaos. The secondary benefit is significantly better hydration, since Maine Coons (and cats in general) drink more when water is moving. It's one of the single best purchases for this breed.
