Maine Coons and Dogs: How Well Do They Actually Get Along?

Maine Coons are the cat breed most commonly recommended for dog households — but that confidence needs to come from a careful introduction process, not just assuming it'll work out.

The Challenge

A dog that has never lived with cats and a cat entering a new home are both operating at high stress simultaneously — which is the worst possible combination for an introduction. The Maine Coon's size and confidence helps, but it doesn't make them immune to a dog that gives chase. An early chase episode can make a cat dog-averse for years regardless of breed.

What We've Found

The critical variable is dog temperament, not breed. A dog with a low prey drive and good impulse control is more important than any specific breed pairing. Maine Coons handle dogs better than most cats because they don't run, which is what triggers chase. Pumpkin was introduced with the dog leashed and allowed to observe from an elevated position first — this dynamic where the cat is higher immediately establishes the correct social arrangement.
